In a presidential election year, existing law requires, with certain exceptions, that a presidential preference primary election be held to determine the preferences of the registered voters of a major political party regarding the party's nominee for President of the United States. (NRS 298.600-298.720) A person who is a qualified candidate to be a major political party's nominee for President of the United States and wants to appear on the ballot for a presidential preference primary election must file with the Secretary of State a declaration of candidacy. (NRS 298.660) Existing law also requires certain persons to pay a filing fee for filing a declaration of candidacy for certain federal, state and local offices. (NRS 293.193) Sections 1 and 2 of this bill require a person who files a declaration of candidacy for the presidential preference primary election to pay a filing fee of $1,000.
